Herencia Polo Sotogrande — The Complete Experience

Some experiences are difficult to describe until you have lived them. Herencia Polo Sotogrande is one of them.

Tucked into the hills of Casares — above the coast, surrounded by Andalusian countryside, far enough from everything to feel genuinely removed from the world — Herencia Polo offers something that is remarkably rare: a complete polo and lifestyle retreat, built around the sport but not limited to it.

You can come for a morning lesson and leave the same day. Or you can stay in one of the three private rooms, wake up to open countryside, spend your mornings on horseback and your afternoons by the pool. Both are valid. Both are completely different experiences.

This is a guide to all of it.

Polo Lessons — From First Timer to Chukka Player

The polo school at Herencia is the heart of the operation. It was built around a single, genuinely held belief: that polo is not an elite sport for a narrow audience. It is a sport that almost anyone can try, given the right instruction, the right horses and the right environment.

Pablo Roldán — the head coach and the person who built Herencia Polo Sotogrande — has spent over 25 years proving this. He has coached members of royal families (HRH Prince Harry, HRH Princess Beatrice, members of the Saudi and Moroccan royal families), international celebrities (Jamiroquai, Naomi Campbell) and — perhaps more meaningfully — hundreds of ordinary people who arrived with zero experience and left wanting more.

For Complete Beginners

You need nothing. Literally nothing. Jeans or riding trousers, a pair of boots or covered shoes, and a willingness to try. Herencia provides everything else: the horse, the helmet, the mallet, all the tack.

The ponies are the first thing most people comment on. They are exceptionally well trained — calm enough to carry a nervous first-timer, responsive enough to actually teach you something. Pablo describes them simply: “They often know where the ball is better than our beginners.”

Your first session will take you through:

  • Riding basics — position, balance, movement — initially in the arena
  • Introduction to the mallet — grip, swing mechanics, the different shot types
  • Coordinated hitting on the move — the moment it starts to feel like polo
  • First contact with the ball — nearside, offside, basic play

By the end of the first day, the school promises you’ll be sitting confidently on horseback with a mallet in hand. In our experience, that’s not an overstatement.

For Experienced Riders and Low-Goal Players

Herencia is equally well-suited to people who already play and want to improve. Pablo offers focused brushing-up sessions for low-goal players — technique corrections, swing adjustments, riding refinement — the kind of targeted, individual coaching that’s difficult to get inside a busy club environment.

For this level, you’re welcome to bring your own gear. The school will match you with players of comparable experience for proper chukkas.

What You Learn Across a Full Programme

Polo team play chukkers at Herencia Polo Sotogrande
  • Polo riding — specific to polo, not general horsemanship
  • Hitting — nearside, offside, back forehand, neck shots, tail and open shots
  • Rules and safety — how the game works and how to play it safely
  • Strategy — individual and team roles and responsibilities
  • Stick and ball — putting everything together in motion
  • Chukkers — actually playing the game with others at your level

Sessions can be scheduled around the student. Pablo is flexible, direct and — based on the reviews from his long list of pupils — consistently one of the most effective polo coaches in the area.

Over 25 years of international coaching experience. Students have included HRH Prince Harry, HRH Princess Beatrice, members of the Saudi and Moroccan royal families, musician Jamiroquai and model Naomi Campbell.

Pablo’s approach is individual. He teaches to the student in front of him — not to a formula. He keeps it simple, builds confidence quickly and focuses on a small number of things done well rather than overwhelming beginners with technique.

Reviews from students are consistent: whatever the level, whatever the problem, Pablo finds the fix. One student described taking a single 30-minute lesson to correct their nearside, then going out and winning a tournament the following week.

He is also — by all accounts — simply great company.

Taster session from €220. Everything included — horse, helmet, mallet, tack, instruction. No experience required. Contact the school directly via polosotogrande.es or WhatsApp on +34 626 443 401.

The Accommodation

Where to Stay — The Loft, The Rock & The Suite

This is where Herencia Polo becomes something more than a polo school.

There are three rooms. Each one is distinct. All of them share the same underlying philosophy: privacy, exclusivity and a sense of genuine retreat from the world. This is not a hotel with polo on the side. It’s a polo retreat with exceptional accommodation built into it.

The Loft accommodation at Herencia Polo Sotogrande
Room 01
The Loft

A light-filled, elevated space with the kind of open, airy quality that sets the tone for a stay at Herencia. The Loft combines comfort with that particular Andalusian sense of space — high ceilings, natural materials, views that remind you where you are.

The Rock accommodation at Herencia Polo Sotogrande
Room 02
The Rock

Named for its connection to the landscape — solid, grounded, rooted in the countryside surrounding it. The Rock is for people who want to feel genuinely immersed in the environment rather than separate from it.

The Suite accommodation at Herencia Polo Sotogrande
Room 03
The Suite

The most complete option at Herencia. The Suite offers the full range of the property’s amenities in a single, cohesive experience — space, privacy and luxury in a setting that few places in this part of Andalusia can match.

What unites all three rooms is the emphasis on seclusion. Herencia Polo Sotogrande distinguishes itself deliberately from larger, busier properties. The experience here is intimate — designed for people who want to escape rather than be entertained.

Waking up at Herencia means opening your eyes to cork oak and countryside. Mornings are quiet. The pace is set by you.

The Setting & Lifestyle

The Setting — Casares, the Hills and the Pool

Location matters enormously here, and it’s worth understanding what Casares actually is.

Casares is one of the most beautiful white villages in Andalusia — stacked improbably against a near-vertical cliff face, with a ruined Moorish castle at its crown and views that stretch across the Strait of Gibraltar to Morocco on a clear day. It is, by most measures, one of the most extraordinary settings in southern Spain.

Herencia Polo sits in the countryside around Casares — in the hills above the coast, far enough from the noise of the seafront to feel genuinely private, close enough to Sotogrande to be accessible. The polo fields sit within this landscape, surrounded by the cork oak forests that define this part of Andalusia.

The Pool

After a morning of lessons, the pool becomes the focus of the afternoon.

This is not a hotel pool with sunbeds arranged in rows. It is a private pool in a private setting — open sky, the sound of the countryside, views across the hills. The kind of afternoon that makes you understand why people who come to this part of Spain for a week end up rethinking how they want to live.

The Rhythm of a Stay

🌅

Morning

Early start on the polo field. The horses are ready. The air is cool. Your session with Pablo begins — whether it’s your first time on a horse or you’re correcting your nearside swing ahead of a tournament.

☀️

Late Morning

The session ends. You cool down, learn what you did well and what to work on tomorrow. The horses are returned to their paddocks. The countryside is fully lit by now.

🏊

Afternoon

The pool. A long lunch. No particular agenda. This is the part of the day that Herencia was built around as much as the polo — the decompression that follows a morning of genuine physical and mental effort.

🌆

Evening

Sotogrande is 20 minutes away. San Roque Club, the marina, the restaurants of the area are all easily accessible. Or you stay put. Either works.

🐎

The Next Day

You do it again. And by the second day, something has shifted. The horse feels more familiar. The mallet feels more natural. The whole thing feels less like a holiday activity and more like something you actually want to get better at.

Who This Is For

Who Herencia Polo Sotogrande Is Really For

The honest answer is: more people than you might expect.

The obvious audience is someone who has always wanted to try polo, happens to be visiting Sotogrande, and books a single taster session. That person will have a genuinely memorable two hours.

But the more interesting audience is the person who books the accommodation alongside the lessons — who commits to three or four days here with the intention of actually learning something. That person tends to leave with a completely different relationship to the sport, to the area and often to the question of how they want to spend time in Andalusia going forward.

Herencia Polo also works exceptionally well as a group experience. A couple. A small group of friends. A corporate team looking for something genuinely different. The privacy and exclusivity of the property — only three rooms — means the experience is never diluted by strangers.

Herencia Polo & Sotogrande — The Connection

Something worth saying, because it comes up consistently.

Many people who discover Sotogrande through polo — through a lesson at Herencia, through watching the Gold Cup, through a chance visit during the polo season — leave asking a different question than the one they arrived with.

They arrived asking: what is polo like?

They leave asking: what would it be like to spend more time here?

The answer to that second question is what CVP Properties exists to help with. Whether you’re exploring Sotogrande for the first time or you already know the area and are thinking seriously about property, we’d be glad to have an honest conversation.
